Air Doctor was born out of co-founder Yam Derfler’s personal experience of inadequate healthcare during a trip to South America. The platform facilitates seamless connections between travellers and a network of 20,000 doctors across 75 countries.

Netherlands-native Jane, who is a regular user of the app on her galavants around the globe, recounts her experience of the Air Doctor service and offers a loyal customer’s perspective on accessing medical care while away from home.
Having used the app more than eight times in various locations such as Bali, Bangkok, Koi Samui, and Paris, it’s safe to say she’s a veteran user of the global service.
When asked to share her overall experience using the Air Doctor service she said, “I love it! I love it! It’s really so convenient. It shows you reviews; you know exactly how much consultations will cost, you can choose from different consultations, and you know if the doctor can speak English.
“It’s so convenient. Because I’ve traveled so much, I’m used to seeing doctors here and there. We started traveling when my children were basically a baby and a toddler, and you always have to Google to find this information. And you don’t know if what you find is true. Some reviews say the doctor is very good, and some say he’s lousy. Or you might find a very good doctor, but then he doesn’t even speak English. Air Doctor is so good – especially if you’re traveling with children.”
As a family that’s traveled abroad with young children, they’re no strangers to being in foreign places and facing health concerns abroad.
Their journeys have taken them to all corners of the globe: Indonesia, Australia, New York, Costa Rica, Mexico, and South Africa, with the Air Doctor app accompanying her throughout the majority of the globetrotting.
When on Lombok Island, Jane found out just how vital the Air Doctor service really is when her eldest daughter was unfortunately bitten by an insect and was experiencing extreme discomfort.
After recalling the event, Jane said: “When we returned to Bali, we used Air Doctor to schedule an appointment for her to see a doctor. It was expensive. But I don’t care – I got everything back from my insurance company. The doctor was just so friendly – especially good with children – but this is also a cultural thing. Balinese people are so considerate, friendly, and reassured us as the worried parents. Everything was okay, but all the doctors I’ve seen everywhere are very friendly. All the doctors I’ve used through Air Doctor are really good.”
Experiences like this, that could no doubt have been much worse if not for the innovative and easy to use Air Doctor service, means that the Dutch mother of two regularly recommends the app to her friends and family – even convincing her parents to download it due to the app’s seamless experience.
In a world that is adapting rapidly to become vastly more reliant on technology, Air Doctor has become the latest gadget to truly change the way that the general public go about their lives.
“I always used to tell everyone back in the day when there was no internet, if they were sick abroad in a foreign country to go the nearest well-known hotel chain, Hilton, Sheraton, etc. Book into a room and ask the staff to help you, but now I tell them to use Air Doctor.”
