Vitality launches WSO2-powered API platform to drive digital shift

Vitality, one of the UK’s largest health and life insurance providers, has deployed WSO2’s API management platform to accelerate digital transformation and modernise its legacy infrastructure.

The decision to launch the new platform was driven by the limitations of Vitality’s previous systems, which struggled with scalability and flexibility.

Legacy infrastructure prevented the insurer from delivering personalised digital services, slowed partner onboarding processes, and restricted its ability to meet rising customer expectations in an increasingly digital marketplace.

Founded under a shared value business model, Vitality provides health and life insurance solutions that combine protection products with wellness and lifestyle benefits. The company’s strategy focuses on growing market share by enhancing customer experiences and creating long-term value through technology-driven services.

The adoption of WSO2’s open-source API gateway technology has enabled Vitality to decouple its core services from front-end applications. By implementing WSO2’s API Manager and integration tools, the insurer has been able to develop a modular architecture that streamlines system management, ensures regulatory compliance, and improves operational visibility.

The WSO2-powered platform simplifies integration between internal and external systems, reducing onboarding times for new partners from six months to just a few weeks. It also accelerates development cycles by enabling automated testing and deployment capabilities, allowing Vitality to bring new digital products and services to market more quickly.

In addition, the system supports centralised service management, ensuring security and compliance requirements are met while enabling real-time responses to business needs. Customers benefit from more personalised digital journeys, simplified onboarding, and seamless access to relevant offers and advice across multiple channels.

Vitality’s operational efficiencies gained from this strategy underpin its long-term transformation plans. By reducing system complexity and increasing agility, the insurer has created a foundation for future growth in digital health and wellness services while maintaining its preventive health focus.

Kris Tokarzewski, CTIO of Vitality UK, said, “WSO2 has become a key enabler of our digital strategy. Their technology has allowed us to scale innovation across our business, ensuring we remain a leader in preventive health and wellness services.”
