Feather expands portfolio with car insurance launch

Berlin-based InsurTech startup Feather, a digital-first insurance provider focused on expats in Europe, has announced the launch of its new car insurance offering.

Berlin-based InsurTech startup Feather, a digital-first insurance provider focused on expats in Europe, has announced the launch of its new car insurance offering.

The company said the new product is designed to simplify the complexity and bureaucracy of buying car insurance, one of the most common pain points for expats moving across Europe

Feather’s offering is a fully online English-language service that delivers coverage in under three minutes.

Founded in Germany, Feather has expanded across the continent, offering a range of insurance products tailored to expats. Its portfolio includes health, liability, and business insurance, and the company has raised $6m to accelerate growth in France and Spain, appointing local leaders to oversee market expansion.

The new car insurance product is available in Spain, France, and Germany – three of Europe’s largest automotive markets.

Developed in partnership with Allianz, Helvetia, and VHV, the product provides a seamless digital journey from sign-up to policy management. Customers receive proof of insurance instantly after purchase and can manage coverage online, free from jargon and paperwork.

Feather’s offering is designed to bring car insurance into the digital era. With its expat-first focus, the company aims to eliminate the language barriers and complex local rules that traditionally slow down the insurance process.

The launch comes as Europe’s motor insurance market is forecast for strong growth. Statista data shows the market is set to reach €175.69bn in 2025, with premiums expected to nearly double by 2034 to $490bn. The sector, which already represents the largest share of Europe’s property & casualty insurance, is seeing accelerated growth due to rising car sales, pricing increases, and consumer demand for digital-first services.

Meanwhile, the European digital insurance market is valued at $128bn in 2024 and is predicted to grow at 33.5% annually through 2030. A survey revealed that 46% of consumers now view digital as the obvious way to purchase insurance, while 81% expect policies to be available in apps and websites.

“Buying car insurance has traditionally been one of the most painful and bureaucratic processes for expats moving to Europe,” Feather CEO and co-founder Rob Schumacher said. “We built this product to remove that friction. In just three minutes, anyone can get reliable coverage in their own language, backed by trusted partners.”

He added: “The car insurance market is massive – and mandatory – but it hasn’t kept up with consumer expectations. People want speed, clarity, and transparency. That’s exactly what Feather delivers.”

Schumacher emphasised Feather’s expat-first approach: “We focus on a group that has been underserved for too long. Expats face complex systems, language barriers, and confusing local rules. Our digital-first platform solves those problems.”

“Launching car insurance is the natural next step in our mission to reinvent insurance for the modern age,” he concluded. “It expands our portfolio and strengthens our position as the go-to digital insurance provider for expats in Europe.”
