Datavant, a healthcare data collaboration platform working with payers, providers, life sciences, legal and insurance clients worldwide, has announced its agreement to acquire DigitalOwl, an InsurTech company specialising in AI-driven medical data analysis.
The move is designed to strengthen Datavant’s ability to make health data more accessible and actionable for both the legal and insurance sectors, according FF News.
Medical record reviews are often slow, error-prone and costly, leading to delays in case resolutions for legal clients and claim approvals for insurance members.
Datavant said the combination with DigitalOwl will help address these inefficiencies and deliver improved outcomes.
Datavant enables secure, compliant and actionable health data collaboration. The firm facilitates the exchange of more than 60m healthcare records each year across thousands of organisations, including more than 80,000 hospitals and clinics, 75% of the largest U.S. health systems and over 350 real-world data partners. Its focus is on connecting fragmented data sources and delivering information to authorised users.
DigitalOwl operates as an InsurTech platform that helps insurance and legal professionals transform unstructured medical data into actionable insights.
Its proprietary AI technology classifies and annotates records, producing contextualised and relevant outputs. Supported by an in-house team of data scientists and industry professionals, the system is continuously refined to reflect evolving workflows.
Earlier this year, DigitalOwl was recognised as the 2025 Natural Language Generation Platform of the Year for medical record reviews.
Datavant will integrate DigitalOwl’s technology with Ontellus’ health records retrieval and claims intelligence capabilities, creating a secure end-to-end platform. The solution will include managed retrieval, automated summaries, chronology, de-duplication and AI-enabled predictive analytics. This combined approach aims to consolidate and simplify how legal and insurance professionals access and analyse complex medical data.
Kyle Armbrester, Datavant CEO, said the acquisition addresses a growing need in the market. “Legal and insurance customers are looking to consolidate and simplify the process of finding, accessing and analyzing specific medical information from a vast amount of both structured and unstructured data sources.
DigitalOwl’s data extraction and summarization technology was built specifically for these use cases and, together with Ontellus’ and Datavant’s digital record exchange platform and extensive provider network reach, we will transform a market that is ripe for change.”
Yuval Man, DigitalOwl CEO, said the acquisition will help accelerate the company’s mission. “Manually reviewing medical records and extracting the necessary information for underwriting, cases and claims work is time-consuming and costly. At DigitalOwl, we’ve focused exclusively on applying advanced technology to automate manual processes and address pain points across the workflow. Joining forces with Datavant will enable us to accelerate our mission and deliver even greater value for our partners and customers.”
