Zurich and YAS launch AI cover for Hong Kong taxis

Zurich Insurance Hong Kong has joined forces with YAS Insurance, an AI-driven InsurTech platform, to introduce a new insurance programme tailored for electric and hybrid taxi drivers in the region.

The partnership aims to raise safety and operational standards across Hong Kong’s taxi sector by leveraging YAS’s AI-powered TAXY platform to monitor driving behaviour and reward safe practices, according to InsurTech Insights.

The new insurance programme is structured in three tiers linked to driver safety performance as measured by the TAXY platform.

The system collects and analyses data on driving behaviour, road conditions, and traffic patterns, providing real-time alerts and optimised routes to reduce risk.

Drivers achieving higher safety scores are eligible for additional benefits, including personal property protection and enhanced accident coverage for family members, incentivising safer driving habits to reduce accidents and improve road safety for passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists.

During a six-month trial, the TAXY platform processed more than 39m data points, including driver behaviour, road conditions, and weather patterns. Zurich and YAS reported measurable improvements in safety scores among drivers participating in the programme.

Eric Hui, CEO of Zurich Insurance Greater China, said, “Our partnership with YAS Insurance is intended to support taxi drivers with protection that meets their needs while contributing to a more resilient transport system.”

William Lee, co-founder of YAS, said, “Partnering with Zurich allows us to raise service standards, improve fleet efficiency, and bring greater peace of mind on the roads. This program will keep evolving, with new incentives, rewards, and partnerships – from e-commerce to electric charging – to strengthen the entire taxi ecosystem and set the stage for wider adoption.”

Zurich Malaysia has also launched Z-Driver EV Protect, a new insurance and takaful product for electric vehicle owners.

It covers EV-specific risks such as battery protection, home charging equipment, and portable charging accessories.

Optional benefits include coverage for home chargers up to RM15,000, portable cables up to RM2,000, and personal liability during charging up to RM50,000. The package also features compassionate allowances for incidents at public charging stations and optional protection against water damage to batteries. Premiums start at RM120.
