Nationwide joins Chrp to boost AI-powered home safety

Nationwide, a major US-based insurance provider, has partnered with Chrp, an AI-driven home risk assessment platform, to introduce a smartphone-led approach to home inspections.

The collaboration is designed to give homeowners greater visibility into hidden risks such as ageing plumbing, outdated wiring and potential fire hazards before they escalate into costly claims, according to FF News.

Nationwide said the partnership aims to offer policyholders a more modern, convenient and proactive way to protect their homes.

Chrp provides an AI-powered inspection tool that enables homeowners to complete a guided photo survey via their mobile device, while Nationwide oversees underwriting, property risk assessment and policy support through its existing home insurance network.

Customers selected for renewal inspections can now use Chrp’s mobile-guided process to capture images throughout their property.

The platform analyses each photo using AI models trained on more than 400 failure points, identifying issues including corrosion, faulty wiring and interior fire hazards.

Once the walkthrough is complete, homeowners receive a tailored report outlining suggested repairs and next steps. More serious concerns are escalated directly to Nationwide’s inspection team for specialist review.

The partnership also introduces a streamlined self-service experience. Traditional inspections often focus heavily on external structures or rely on outdated checklists. Chrp integrates construction and insurance expertise directly into its AI training models, offering a deeper analysis of the risk patterns that typically lead to insurance claims.

Additional data shared through the programme highlights why preventative inspections matter. Nationwide reports that 70% of non-catastrophic claims originate inside the home, while water damage unrelated to weather remains the second most frequent homeowners claim type in the US. Fire losses average more than $88,000 per incident, and water damage frequently exceeds $15,000. Electrical malfunctions also cause an estimated 23,700 residential fires a year.

The offering is now available in all states where Nationwide writes homeowners policies and is being gradually rolled out to existing policyholders selected for renewal inspections.

Nationwide vice president, personal lines property, Helen Simonett said, “Nationwide is always looking for ways to enhance the experience for our members. In addition to offering a modern, convenient inspection option, Chrp’s platform allows us to empower members to be proactive in protecting one of their most important assets, their home.”

Chrp CRO and co-founder Zane Koeller said, “Water damage, in particular, is a major driver of losses. Our platform has found that 30% of homes contain active plumbing hazards likely to lead to a claim within four years — often from small, inexpensive parts like shut-off valves or aging supply lines. We are here to help homeowners catch potential issues while they’re still fixable and save them the inconvenience of having to recover from the damage.”

Simonett added, “Providing an in-depth review at no cost to the homeowner may help policyholders better understand why they should care about a hazard now and what they can do to prevent a potential problem down the line. The platform is also beneficial for our agency partners because of its self-service nature and insights that help them serve our mutual customers, the homeowner.”
