Independent specialty MGA HIVE Underwriters, a Lloyd’s coverholder focused on practitioner-led specialty underwriting, has appointed two senior marine underwriting specialists, to its newly formed Marine specialty underwriting team.

The appointments see Alistair Marriott joining as head of marine and Jared Short taking on the role of head of transportation and logistics, as the MGA builds out its practitioner-led marine platform.

Both appointments will become effective July 2026 following the completion of their contractual obligations with current employers.

HIVE Underwriters operates as a Managing General Agent (MGA) and Lloyd’s coverholder, underwriting on behalf of a diversified panel of Lloyd’s syndicates and insurance companies. The firm specialises in niche, complex risks across multiple specialty lines, building underwriting platforms led by experienced practitioners with deep technical expertise. HIVE places a strong emphasis on disciplined underwriting, long-term performance and collaborative relationships with brokers and capacity providers.

Marriott joins HIVE from Everest Insurance, where he most recently served as deputy head of marine and head of cargo, international. He is widely recognised as a market leader with significant experience in building and leading international marine and cargo underwriting teams. His background includes underwriting complex global portfolios and delivering consistent, long-term results across diverse marine classes.

Short joins from Markel International, where he held the role of senior underwriter for logistics, ports and terminals. He is a recognised specialist in transportation and logistics risks, with extensive experience managing liability-driven portfolios. His expertise spans logistics, ports and terminals liability and property, warehousekeepers’ liability, container lessor and operator risks, and shippers interest risks.

Both appointments will see Marriott and Short working alongside Nick Lewis, who is set to join HIVE as marine CUO in July 2026. Together, the trio will lead the development of HIVE’s practitioner-led marine underwriting operation, with a focus on building a sustainable, knowledge-driven platform from the ground up.

HIVE’s marine platform will target specialist niche segments within the marine class, supported by aligned capacity, robust data and close broker partnerships. The launch of marine builds on the firm’s established aviation platform and its recent expansion into space underwriting, reinforcing HIVE’s position as a focused, multi-line specialty MGA.

HIVE Underwriters CEO Bruce Carman said, “From the outset, our ambition in Marine is to build a business around exceptional, senior practitioners – people with the experience, judgement and leadership capability to build something meaningful and sustainable. Alistair and Jared are both extremely well known and well respected in the market, with strong reputations built on technical excellence and underwriting discipline.

“Alistair and Jared have also worked together in previous roles and share a clear understanding of how successful Marine portfolios are built, led and grown. We are incredibly proud to attract this calibre of talent and to offer them the opportunity to build out a Marine operation at HIVE with real autonomy, aligned capacity and a long-term knowledge-led underwriting mindset.”

HIVE Underwriters head of marine Alistair Marriott said, “HIVE’s approach to Marine is clearly differentiated; it’s about building a business properly, with the right people and resources, clear underwriting parameters and a strong focus on performance over the long term. The opportunity to work alongside a talented team at an independent, entrepreneurial MGA to help shape a Marine platform from the ground up is hugely compelling.”

HIVE Underwriters head of transportation and logistics Jared Short said, “Transportation and Logistics is a specialist class that rewards deep technical understanding and disciplined underwriting. HIVE’s commitment to practitioner-led underwriting and its willingness to invest in experienced teams creates a strong platform to build a portfolio that delivers consistent, sustainable returns. I’m excited to be part of that journey.”
