Marsh launches Stratus, $10bn digital infrastructure cover

Marsh, the global risk, reinsurance, capital, people and investment and management consulting group, has introduced Stratus, a property insurance exchange built to address the intricate operational risks facing digital infrastructure projects, including data centres and the critical systems that support them.

The new exchange gives clients access to as much as $10bn in property insurance capacity, arranged through a single placement within the global property risk transfer market, covering the worldwide exposures of companies domiciled in the US. Thirty traditional and alternative capital provider participants sit within the exchange structure, each assessing individual risks to decide the most suitable level of support for every placement.

This more structured trading approach is intended to help providers better evaluate, measure and spread risk, while also tackling aggregation concerns that tend to surface once digital infrastructure projects move into the operational stage.

Stratus will draw on Marsh’s data, analytics and advisory capabilities to support clients in sourcing tailored property cover suited to their individual requirements as they move digital infrastructure assets from development into operation.

Stratus has been built to work alongside Marsh’s existing construction-phase facility, Nimbus, giving clients a combined market option as assets progress through their lifecycle. The two facilities can be used independently or in tandem, with further coverages layered in as requirements change over time. While Stratus begins as a property-focused offering, Marsh has plans to broaden it into additional lines such as inland marine, cyber and casualty, with the aim of eventually offering a single access point for operational digital infrastructure clients.

Marsh US property digital infrastructure leader Joe Macejak said, “As large digital infrastructure projects shift from construction to operation, the associated risks become larger and more complex, driven by multi-billion-dollar campuses, self-generating power systems, and emerging technologies used in processing units and critical equipment.

“By combining Marsh’s engineering data and analytics, risk consulting capabilities, and access to the global (re)insurance and capital markets, Stratus is designed to improve the quality and efficiency of operational digital infrastructure property placements and help clients secure the protection they need to support growth at scale.”
