Akur8, an InsurTech provider of actuarial technology, has detailed a new capability designed to tackle one of the less visible risks in insurance pricing: making sure the right rate reaches the right policy at the right time.
At first glance, changing an insurance rate sounds straightforward. A new rate is approved, tested and deployed, and the old one is replaced. In practice, insurers can have multiple rate versions running across products, states and coverage types, creating plenty of opportunities for something to go wrong between the pricing decision and its arrival in production.
Akur8’s Effective Date Routing capability, built into its Deploy insurance rating engine, is designed to address that problem by determining which rate version should apply to each transaction.
Instead of overwriting an existing rate when a new version goes live, insurers can add the new rate with a defined effective date. Deploy then uses two dates to determine which version should be applied: a reference-date policy date and a rate as-of date, which ties a transaction to the version that was live when the quote was issued. The reference date, usually the policy effective date, binds to the version’s effective date, the rate as of date binds to the activation date.
Akur8 uses a New York Commercial Property policy to illustrate how this works. A broker quotes a policy on 2 February (the rate as of date) for a policy effective on 15 March (the reference date). If the broker binds the policy two weeks later, after another rate version has gone live, the rate-as-of date keeps the original quote on the rates it was priced against.
That same policy can then be recalculated using a newer rate book during a renewal or rewrite that takes place later. The filed manual logic is applied automatically, without someone having to manually determine which version should be used, by submitting a new rate-as-of-date and reference-date.
The example highlights a wider problem for P&C insurers. Rate versioning is only one part of the process. Pricing decisions also need to pass through testing, governance and deployment before they reach a live policy.
Those steps are often spread across different systems, spreadsheets and email threads. As a result, actuarial, IT and operations teams can end up manually coordinating each rate change, with every handoff creating another opportunity for an error or delay.
Akur8’s Deploy platform is designed to bring those steps together, moving updates from its modelling environment through user acceptance testing (UAT) and into production without any need for handoff from team to team and recoding the logic in multiple places. Effective-date routing is built into the workflow, allowing Deploy managers to seamlessly prompt actuarial rates into UAT and Production without changing the carrier’s policy admin system.
Actuaries can schedule a rate change in advance and test it against its exact go-live date, so problems are caught before any policy is quoted, not discovered after release. IT builds the rating API integration once, and future rate updates flow through without further changes, which means pricing no longer waits on the IT backlog.
The governance side is equally important. Akur8 said rate changes are tested in UAT, then promoted to production with dual sign-off. Every approval leaves an audit trail, giving teams clear visibility over how and when changes go live.
For P&C insurers managing frequent rate changes across products and jurisdictions, Akur8’s approach points to a shift towards treating rate deployment as part of the pricing process itself, rather than as a separate technical step once the actuarial work is finished.
