Symetra brings bereavement platform to life policyholders

Symetra partners with Empathy for bereavement support

Symetra Life Insurance Company, a Bellevue, Washington-based provider of employee benefits, annuities and life insurance, has teamed up with Empathy, a platform dedicated to helping families manage the emotional and practical aftermath of loss, to extend bereavement support to group life insurance beneficiaries free of charge.

The partnership, which sits within Symetra’s Workforce Benefits division, gives group life insurance policyholders access to Empathy Loss Support™ as part of their existing cover. The offering is aimed at bridging the gap between financial protection and the wider challenges families face following a bereavement. According to Empathy’s 2024 report, The Cost of Dying, the average family spends $12,616 on loss-related expenses and takes 15 months to complete the associated administrative burden.

Empathy’s platform is built to go further than conventional bereavement or employee assistance programme (EAP) services. Rather than offering generic support, it delivers personalised care plans, a dedicated care team member, grief resources, funeral planning assistance, identity theft protection and access to an award-winning app.

Support is tailored to each family’s specific circumstances, covering both the emotional and logistical dimensions of loss, including estate administration and probate processes.

Symetra Workforce Benefits vice president Todd Dzen said, “We understand the challenges that loss brings, including grief, and are dedicated to being there for our customers every step of the way. We’re pleased to offer Empathy’s services as part of Symetra’s commitment to support families during their journey.

“Through our Empathy partnership, we can expand needed support to beneficiaries in navigating the myriad aspects of loss in addition to the financial safety net offered by life insurance.”

Empathy co-founder and CEO Ron Gura said, “We are proud to work with Symetra as they expand their Group Life insurance offering to beneficiaries and demonstrate their commitment to care and innovation. By meeting families where they are, beneficiaries receive the essential and meaningful support they need following a loss.”
