Aviva rolls out AI-powered critical illness underwriting capability

Aviva, a UK insurance group, has expanded its AI-powered underwriting summarisation tool to individual critical illness applications, marking a further step in its use of generative AI across protection insurance.

Aviva, a UK insurance group, has expanded its AI-powered underwriting summarisation tool to individual critical illness applications, marking a further step in its use of generative AI across protection insurance.

The technology, first launched for individual life insurance underwriting in November 2025, converts complex medical reports into concise summaries designed to help underwriters make faster and more consistent decisions, according to InsurTech Insights.

According to Aviva, the tool has already improved operational efficiency in life underwriting, reducing review times per case by around 50%.

With the latest rollout, Aviva becomes the first insurer to apply the technology to critical illness underwriting, extending the AI framework to handle the greater complexity of the product, including a wider range of medical conditions and risk factors.

Testing has shown the system delivers comparable accuracy to its life insurance use case, while helping streamline underwriting at the point of application.

The solution also supports post-application auditing, enabling insurers to review underwriting decisions and maintain consistency across cases.

Robert Morrison, Chief Underwriting Officer at Aviva, said, “Building on the recent launch of our life insurance AI summarisation underwriting tool, this is another important step in our commitment to making protection insurance faster, simpler and more accessible for our customers using generative AI.

“Throughout development, we’ve focused on enhancing the stages of the underwriting journey that deliver the most material gains for customers, advisers and our underwriters in both service and efficiency.

“Our current capability also extends to post-application auditing, and our next focus will be on delivering summarisation for income protection. By bringing AI summarisation to the protection market, we’re helping more customers get the protection they need more quickly.”

Looking ahead, Aviva plans to extend the technology further by introducing AI summarisation for income protection underwriting, continuing its strategy of embedding AI across its protection product suite.

The development reflects growing momentum across the insurance sector as carriers adopt AI-driven underwriting tools to streamline decision-making, improve accuracy and enhance the customer experience for increasingly complex protection products.
