French insurers turn to decisioning as risks grow more complex

French insurers are facing growing pressure to modernise how they make decisions as emerging risks become harder to assess and customer expectations continue to evolve.

That challenge was explored at Earnix’s first France-focused Eˣcelerate event in Paris on 23 July 2026. The event brought together insurance executives, technology leaders and industry experts to examine how insurers can improve decision-making across pricing, underwriting and customer engagement.

For insurers, the challenge extends beyond introducing new technology. Pricing and underwriting decisions need to remain transparent, consistent and appropriately governed, particularly as more processes become automated. Executives from Crédit Agricole Assurances and Alptis discussed how automated decisions, technology-assisted judgement and human expertise could work together within underwriting workflows.

The issue is becoming more significant as insurers confront risks that are increasingly difficult to model. Representatives from Groupe Covéa, Matmut, CCR and the Institut des Actuaires examined how insurers can respond to emerging risks, including climate and cyber.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of the infrastructure supporting decisions. Insurers need to connect data, analytics and business rules with the operational processes where pricing and underwriting decisions are made.

Four priorities emerged from the event: improving governance and transparency, modernising pricing and underwriting, strengthening data foundations and preparing organisations for continued transformation as regulation and customer expectations change.

Earnix is positioning its AIOS platform around this challenge. The platform brings together data, analytics, business rules and human expertise through what the company describes as a unified decisioning layer. Earnix said the approach is intended to help insurers translate information into consistent and governed decisions across the organisation.

The event also brought together senior figures from across the French insurance and actuarial sectors. Speakers included Groupe Covéa chief data officer Arthur Dénouveaux, Matmut transformation director François-Xavier Enderle, Groupe Crédit Agricole Assurances chief data & AI officer Aldrick Zappellini, Alptis digital & transformation director Véronique Pachoud, Institut des Actuaires president Simon Le Dily and CCR CEO Edouard Vieillefond.

Their involvement points to the breadth of the transformation challenge. Decisioning is no longer confined to a single underwriting or pricing function. It increasingly sits across data, technology, risk management and organisational processes.

France offers a particularly relevant market for this discussion. Earnix described the country as one of Europe’s largest and most regulated insurance sectors, creating a significant environment for insurers to balance operational change with regulatory requirements.

The issues discussed at the Paris event are also relevant beyond France. Earnix said insurers across Europe are dealing with similar pressures from regulatory scrutiny, increasingly complex risks and changing customer expectations.
