BHSI expands specialist insurance offering into Poland

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is extending its European commercial insurance operations into Poland, appointing Carsten Keune as country manager to lead its entry into the market and support its wider growth ambitions across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

Based in Warsaw, Keune will oversee BHSI’s Polish business, setting its local direction and building relationships with brokers and corporate customers. The appointment gives the insurer dedicated leadership in a market it is targeting as part of its broader regional expansion.

BHSI plans to bring its specialist underwriting capabilities and claims expertise to Polish businesses, drawing on the financial backing of its parent group, Berkshire Hathaway. Its model focuses on providing tailored cover for complex commercial risks while developing long-term partnerships with customers and insurance intermediaries.

The insurer’s commercial offering across CEE includes property, casualty, construction, energy, executive and professional liability, marine and multinational insurance. Its arrival in Poland adds another market to its regional network and creates an additional base for serving businesses with specialist coverage needs.

BHSI conducts its European business through two entities: Berkshire Hathaway European Insurance DAC (BHEI), an Irish-domiciled designated activity company registered in Dublin, and Berkshire Hathaway International Insurance Limited (BHIIL), incorporated in England and Wales with its registered office in London. Both are affiliates of Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (BHSIC), a Nebraska-domiciled corporation.

BHSIC provides a broad range of insurance products, covering commercial property, casualty, healthcare professional liability, transactional liability, surety, travel, accident and health, employer stop loss, homeowners and multinational insurance. BHSIC, BHIIL and BHEI are all part of Berkshire Hathaway’s National Indemnity group of insurers.

The group holds an A++ financial strength rating from AM Best and an AA+ rating from Standard & Poor’s. BHSI’s international network spans North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, with existing European offices in London, Dublin, Cologne, Munich, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm and Zurich.

Andreas Krause, head of DACH at BHSI, said, “Carsten brings the experience, leadership and market insight to advance BHSI’s growth across Central & Eastern Europe. He is well suited to establish our presence in Poland, build lasting relationships with customers and brokers, and bring BHSI’s capabilities and long-term approach to businesses across the country.”
