InsurTech firm Oscar hires new chief medical officer

New York insurtech startup Oscar is hiring Shaden Marzouk as its new chief medical officer.

A neurosurgeon and US army veteran, Marzouk will replace Aran Ron in the role.

Ron was a founding member of Oscar and the company has not given a reason why he left in April.

Oscar aims to offer cheaper, more-personalised insurance plans to users and Marzouk will oversee the company efforts to improve the care it delivers to users.

Oscar has raised almost $730m to date, most recently a $400m private equity round led by Fidelity in February and is valued at $2.7bn.

The company recently revealed that as a result of heavy losses it plans to withdraw from Dallas and New jersey to focus on its native New York market.

It reportedly plans to expand its offering with an insurance product targeted at SMEs.
