Hippo to offer home maintenance services after Sheltr acquisition

Hippo has released its protective home maintenance services following the acquisition of Sheltr, a platform that helps homeowners take care of their homes.

Through this acquisition, Hippo will release new home management services, beginning with home wellness checkups.

Sheltr connects customers with maintenance professionals that provide home wellness checkups. This prevents small issues from becoming expensive repairs and claims. The service consists of nearly 30 items such as changing HVAC filters, replacing smoke alarm batteries and checks for leaky pipes or clogged vents. A list of recommendations is also given to ensure the correct care is given to the house.

The Hippo platform ran a pilot of Sheltr, more than 50% of the items checked during services could lead to major claims.

Hippo vice president of growth initiatives Daniel Blanaru said, “We’re excited to take the next step in developing the best home insurance product available by helping our homeowners identify and reduce risk with protective home maintenance.

“We knew we found the right partner in Sheltr to help us do this. They share our dedication to a customer-first experience along with a high standard for service and close attention to loss prevention. Together with the Sheltr team, we’re creating long-term value for our customers that brings home insurance into a new era.”

During 2020, the startup is looking to expand into new US states.

Hippo is a home insurance platform which boasts data-driven pricing and real-time underwriting to analyse public datasets including municipal building records and satellite imagery of properties.

Hippo closed a $100m Series D round earlier in the year to support the reach of its insurance policies and deepen its product suite.
