Mapfre, the insurance group, has agreed to take a holding in Tuio, a specialist digital insurance distributor built on advanced technology and a mature use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Under the terms of the deal, Mapfre will take ownership of 38.9% of Tuio’s share capital, structured through the direct acquisition of shares from certain existing shareholders followed by participation in a capital increase.
The agreement will enable Tuio, which presently operates only in Spain, to push forward its innovation agenda and roll out its digital model into fresh markets across Latin America and Europe, regions where Mapfre already operates. The InsurTech’s international expansion is set to begin next year.
Tuio holds the distinction of being the first insurance app globally to be embedded within ChatGPT for selling insurance products. Since that integration went live in early February, AI assistants have accounted for more than 20% of the company’s new customer acquisition.
For Mapfre, the move reflects its belief that AI, and agentic AI in particular, represents a profound technological shift for both the insurance sector and the wider digital economy. The investment allows the group to deepen its focus on nimbler, more personalised distribution approaches that align with evolving consumer demands, while blending technology with the added value of human advice. The insurer also believes AI can help narrow the insurance protection gap by opening up access to cover for groups that have historically been underserved.
