MAPFRE RE partners with ICEYE to boost flood response

MAPFRE RE, a global reinsurer, and ICEYE, a satellite-based disaster management solutions provider, have announced a new agreement to license ICEYE’s Flood Insights data for global use.

MAPFRE RE, a global reinsurer, and ICEYE, a satellite-based disaster management solutions provider, have announced a new agreement to license ICEYE’s Flood Insights data for global use.

The partnership aims to enhance MAPFRE RE’s ability to quickly assess and respond to natural catastrophe events by integrating ICEYE’s near real-time flood data into its catastrophe event response framework, according to FF News.

This integration will enable rapid loss estimation and provide immediate visibility of financial impacts across MAPFRE RE’s global reinsurance portfolios.

MAPFRE RE, a subsidiary of MAPFRE Group, is one of the top global reinsurers, offering reinsurance services across a wide range of risks and geographies.

ICEYE, based in Finland, operates one of the world’s largest synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellations, providing critical Earth observation data, particularly for flood and disaster monitoring.

The Flood Insights data from ICEYE will be used to support situational awareness and communications during catastrophic weather events, providing building-level inundation information and flood extent data within hours of impact. This is especially beneficial in regions such as Latin America, where timely disaster data has been historically difficult to obtain.

In addition to licensing the Flood Insights data, MAPFRE RE is also evaluating ICEYE’s Hurricane Solution. Launched in March 2025 to coincide with the U.S. hurricane season, the solution offers a consolidated view of flood and wind damage within 24 hours of landfall, enhancing decision-making along a storm’s trajectory.

The collaboration will help MAPFRE RE improve communications with stakeholders and gain faster clarity on event impacts, strengthening its reinsurance response strategy.

Miriam García, manager of the Natural Perils Area at MAPFRE RE, said, “At MAPFRE RE, we are committed to ensuring that our response to extreme weather events is grounded in rapid access to high-quality data.

“Our agreement with ICEYE will provide us with a new level of hazard insight, heightening our situational awareness and enabling us to identify impact areas within hours and gain a clear understanding of the potential impact across our portfolios.”

ICEYE VP insurance solutions Rupert Bidwell said, “Today’s announcement marks an exciting step forward in our data collaboration with MAPFRE RE. By integrating the full capabilities of our flood solution into their existing response infrastructure and demonstrating the potential of our hurricane product, we’re equipping their teams with the most current, high-resolution damage data available.

“This will empower MAPFRE RE to establish much greater control over the financial impact of catastrophe events much earlier in the response process.”
