AI InsurTech Sixfold has launched Narrative, a new capability designed to streamline life and health underwriting by reducing the time spent reviewing complex medical and case documentation.

The launch targets a key bottleneck in underwriting workflows. While advances in automation have improved decision-making, up to 88% of life and health cases still require human review, according to Gen Re.

Much of the delay comes from the time needed to gather, organise and interpret large volumes of information before a decision can be made.

Sixfold provides AI-driven underwriting tools used by global insurers including: Zurich, Generali, Guardian, Skyward Specialty and Mosaic. Its platform is designed to process submissions at scale, helping insurers improve speed and consistency while increasing underwriting capacity.

Narrative addresses the early stages of underwriting by automatically ingesting all available case data, including medical records, lab results and reports, and generating a structured summary tailored to the underwriter’s workflow. The tool highlights key clinical facts, identifies missing information and signals next steps, reducing the need for manual document review.

For example, in a case involving hypertension and elevated cholesterol, underwriters typically need to locate details such as blood pressure readings, medication, smoking status and family history. Narrative surfaces this information immediately, reducing what could take an hour of review to just minutes.

The capability is configurable to different underwriting teams, allowing insurers to tailor outputs to their specific processes. This supports more consistent decision-making while reducing the need for follow-up queries with brokers and clients.

The impact is already visible in early deployments. One Sixfold customer processing more than 10,000 cases annually is using Narrative to review 70% of submissions, only turning to deeper analysis tools for more complex cases. The approach is helping to improve turnaround times and streamline workflows across high-volume lines such as structured settlements and annuities.

The tool also offers benefits for reinsurers, where submissions often arrive in inconsistent formats. By standardising information at the start of the process, Narrative reduces the need for additional communication before quoting begins.

Sixfold product manager Noah Grosshandler said, “Narrative isn’t a one-size-fits-all summary. It’s configurable to each team’s workflow, so what gets surfaced reflects what actually matters to their underwriters. Some customers are already using it for most of their cases, with deeper analysis reserved for the rare cases that need it.”
