Ledgebrook raises $200m to scale AI underwriting for complex risks

Ledgebrook, a Boston-based InsurTech specialising in complex commercial risks, has raised $200m in primary equity funding to expand its AI-native underwriting platform in the US excess and surplus (E&S) market.

The round was co-led by Allianz X, the strategic investment arm of Allianz Group, and Rockefeller Capital Management, with participation from new and existing investors. Allianz Re has also agreed to a multi-year reinsurance arrangement with Ledgebrook, providing additional risk capacity.

The funding will support further development of Blackbird, Ledgebrook’s proprietary underwriting platform, as the company expands its technology and underwriting capabilities. Ledgebrook expects cumulative gross premium written to surpass $1bn, having begun binding business in 2023.

The company works with wholesale brokers placing difficult-to-insure risks, providing access to capital providers while underwriting general liability, professional liability and specialty lines for mid-market businesses. Its products are distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers.

Blackbird processes broker submissions, classifies exposures and calculates technical rates, reducing the time required to quote specialty risks from weeks to hours. Ledgebrook’s underwriters retain responsibility for final risk selection and pricing decisions.

The investment will also expand Allianz X’s US property and casualty (P&C) portfolio, which covers multiple product lines and commercial segments. Ledgebrook’s focus on general liability for mid-market businesses in the E&S market adds exposure to a segment not previously covered by the platform.

Founded in Boston in 2022 by Gage Caligaris, a Harvard-trained mathematician and actuary, Ledgebrook has around 300 employees, including approximately 80 underwriters and 50 engineers.

In August 2026, Ledgebrook Specialty Insurance Company received an A- (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating and a Financial Size Category of VIII from AM Best, supporting the company’s move towards a full-stack insurance model.

Ledgebrook founder and CEO Gage Caligaris said, “Our vision is for Ledgebrook to be the company that makes the wheels of insurance spin faster. Businesses with complex risk deserve specialized underwriting, rated with rigor and delivered at speed. Our platform lets our underwriters do that with real discipline. Allianz X backing gives us the capital to keep investing in technology and talent. We’re building this company for the long term.”

Allianz X CEO Dr. Nazim Cetin said, “The industry is applying AI to its simplest risks first, because that is where automation comes easily. We think the larger prize sits at the other end, in complex, hard to place business, where underwriting judgment is scarce and slow decisions cost the most. That’s exactly the gap Blackbird is built to close, and it’s why Ledgebrook fills a meaningful space in our U.S. P&C platform.”

Ledgebrook president of E&S John Mullen said, “E&S is seeing strong multi-year growth. Admitted carriers tightened their appetite and pushed risks that were once routinely placed in the admitted market into this channel, and we’re excited about accelerating the delivery of value to our distribution partners and insured customers in this segment.”
