As insurers modernise their technology, acquire businesses, and expand AI initiatives, the quality and accessibility of their data is becoming increasingly important. ReSource Pro is building its Data Services practice to address that challenge, helping insurance businesses migrate, modernise, integrate and improve their data to deliver better insights and create the trusted foundation for its broader Managed AI Services offering.
For Gerry Leitão, Head of Data Services at ReSource Pro (pictured), the work starts with understanding the outcome an insurer is trying to achieve rather than leading with a technology decision.
The Data Services practice launched this spring, bringing together capabilities from three ReSource Pro acquisitions across the carrier, MGA and retail insurance markets. The combined practice now operates a single data migration factory delivering between 50 and 75 migrations a year. ReSource Pro has completed more than 500 migration and data conversion projects, moving more than 1 billion records.
Turning migration into data improvement
ReSource Pro sees core system migrations and acquisitions as opportunities to address wider data issues. Migration requires insurers to examine their records and decide how information should be represented in the target system.
“We see migration as an AI readiness program in disguise,” Leitão said.
Traditionally, the focus has been on moving information from the source system into the target and reconciling it. ReSource Pro is using that process to improve data beyond the migration itself.
“Most migrations are measured by whether the data reconciles. We’re focused on using that process as an opportunity to make the data better than we found it,” Leitão said.
That can include establishing trusted data definitions, lineage, ownership, and priorities for improvement. Some insurers have established data teams and active modernization programs already underway. Others want the same outcomes but don’t have the scale to build those capabilities internally. ReSource Pro helps organizations achieve those outcomes regardless of where they are in their data journey.
Bringing acquired businesses together
Acquisitions create another data challenge, particularly when each new company brings its own systems, carrier relationships and data structures.
“We have customers that might have 20, 30, 40 acquisitions, and they’re all running on separate platforms,” Leitã o said. “How do they bring those into a common platform?”
For acquisitive brokers, integrating data from multiple agencies can make it difficult to build a consistent view of the organisation and its relationships with carriers.
“Every time a customer acquires a new agency, they have a new set of relationship carrier codes, formats, contracts,” Leitão explained. “It’s really a byproduct of growth.”
As brokers grow through acquisition, the same carrier can become fragmented across multiple carrier codes, agreements and reporting structures, making it difficult to understand the full economics of the relationship.
“Bringing that information together doesn’t just simplify reporting. It improves visibility into carrier performance and contingency opportunities,” Leitão said.
Building the data foundation for AI
AI is adding a reason for insurers to address underlying data issues. Employees have historically been able to compensate for imperfect information by recognising exceptions and knowing which sources to trust. AI does not have that same institutional knowledge.
“AI removes that buffer,” Leitão said. “AI is consuming data directly at scale. It doesn’t know which spreadsheet is the trusted version. It doesn’t understand unwritten rules.”
That makes context as important as data quality, with AI needing to understand what the data means. For ReSource Pro, Data Services can complement its Managed AI Services, giving insurers the data quality, structure and context needed to support AI initiatives rather than treating data and AI as separate projects.
“Data has always been a challenge, but as organizations look to embed AI into workflows and accelerate decisions, the importance of getting that foundation right only increases. AI doesn’t require a new foundation. It requires a stronger one,” Leitão said.
