Lloyd’s, the world’s leading marketplace for insurance and reinsurance, has appointed Alexandra Cliff as its new chief financial officer (CFO), effective 1 May 2025.

Cliff, who joined Lloyd’s in 2022 as deputy CFO, will step into the role following a planned leadership transition.

Lloyd’s is a global insurance and reinsurance marketplace, renowned for providing specialist risk solutions and underwriting expertise. It operates as a hub for insurers, brokers, and investors to conduct business, ensuring capital efficiency and robust risk management.

Bringing over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, Cliff has held senior finance roles at Direct Line Group, StarStone, and AJ Gallagher.

She is a Chartered Accountant and previously spent eight years at PwC in both London and the US. As part of Lloyd’s Executive Committee, she has played a key role in financial strategy and market reporting.

Cliff succeeds Burkhard Keese, who is stepping down to focus on investment roles within the German insurance market.

However, he will continue to serve as a strategic advisor to Lloyd’s, particularly supporting the development of the risk transfer vehicle, London Bridge Two.

Keese joined Lloyd’s in 2019 and has been instrumental in driving a major performance turnaround, strengthening the balance sheet, and securing the highest financial strength ratings in Lloyd’s history from S&P Global and AM Best.

He also played a pivotal role in enhancing Lloyd’s attractiveness to global investors through initiatives such as London Bridge One and Two.

Lloyd’s CEO John Neal praised both Cliff and Keese for their contributions, stating:
“Since joining Lloyd’s as Deputy CFO, Alex has played a vital role in achieving our enhanced financial strength, including recent ratings upgrades, building our investment proposition and transforming market reporting. She is a well-respected member of the Executive Committee and I have no doubt she will continue to deliver against our strategic priorities as CFO.

“I would like to thank Burkhard for his work guiding Lloyd’s to some of its best-ever financial results and his execution of the capital proposition, which has made Lloyd’s more resilient than ever. He has been integral in elevating Lloyd’s financial strength ratings and attracting high-profile capital investment to the market.”

Cliff’s appointment is subject to regulatory approval.
