Why digital accessibility is key for product success

In an increasingly digital-first economy, ensuring inclusivity is no longer a checkbox exercise, it’s a strategic necessity. With legislation such as the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882) and updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), accessibility is now a legal obligation across both sides of the Atlantic. For companies, this is a chance to enhance user satisfaction and expand their market reach, according to dacadoo.

Digital accessibility is about crafting websites and mobile applications that anyone, including people with disabilities, can use without barriers.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) offer a comprehensive framework to achieve this through four foundational principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust, commonly referred to as POUR.

These standards are not just for people with permanent disabilities. Everyday circumstances, such as a broken arm, fatigue, or even carrying heavy shopping, can hinder digital engagement.

By prioritising accessible design, companies can significantly improve user retention, engagement, and satisfaction across all demographics. Additionally, implementing these standards often enhances SEO, helping digital products reach broader audiences.

Putting accessibility into practice

To embed accessibility in digital products, the WCAG outlines specific criteria across three levels: A (basic), AA (enhanced), and AAA (comprehensive).

These range from text alternatives and keyboard navigation at Level A, to high contrast ratios, error identification, and multimedia captions at Level AA, and finally to sign language support and advanced customisation at Level AAA.

For example, Level A ensures basic usability with alt text and keyboard accessibility. Level AA, the most commonly adopted compliance standard, requires features like visible focus indicators, contrast ratios of at least 4.5:1, and error suggestions.

Level AAA goes further with elements like simplified content and enhanced navigation options. Collectively, these standards ensure content works well with assistive technologies and across a wide variety of user needs.

Accessibility in action: dacadoo’s design evolution

dacadoo, a digital health engagement platform, has embraced these accessibility principles. One design update replaced a drag gesture for a simple tap in a hydration tracking feature—easing usability for people using assistive inputs and increasing screen reader clarity with added text labels. The team also adjusted their primary colour to meet contrast standards.

Another redesign addressed the platform’s “Wheel of Life” interface. Previously, it presented challenges in navigation, contrast, and user comprehension.

In response, dacadoo simplified the visual component, added explanatory cards with scores and context, and removed multi-functional links, transforming it from a complex navigation tool to an intuitive visual summary.

Maintaining compliance in white label solutions

dacadoo’s white label platform offers clients extensive customisation, which introduces challenges in maintaining accessibility compliance—particularly at the AA level. To manage this, dacadoo has implemented proactive strategies:

  • Clients are pre-informed about upcoming design changes, creating space for early feedback and accessibility discussions.

  • Educational resources and documentation are regularly shared to help clients understand accessibility best practices.

  • The platform includes internal admin tools with built-in guidance to support clients in making accessible configuration choices.

By integrating these measures, dacadoo ensures its clients not only meet legal obligations but also create inclusive user experiences.

Accessibility should not be sidelined as a compliance task—it’s a crucial part of creating effective, equitable digital products. dacadoo’s consistent application of WCAG principles, combined with internal accountability and client education, sets a clear example of how accessible design drives better user experiences. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, making inclusivity a standard practice ensures no user is left behind.
