Hippo grows homeowners insurance reach to 22 US states

Hippo Holdings, a technology-native insurance group that diversifies risk across personal and commercial lines through its carrier platform, has confirmed plans to widen the reach of its Hippo Homeowners Insurance Program.

The insurer will take the programme into 14 further states via partnerships with national distribution networks, lifting its footprint from 8 to 22 states during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The newly added states are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, where cover will be offered to homeowners outside the newly built home channel that the programme initially served.

Hippo said the move builds on two years of work tightening its underwriting standards and rebuilding its quoting and underwriting technology, which had been done in readiness for a broader rollout beyond newly built properties. The insurer is now applying that platform selectively, targeting markets where it believes it can achieve an underwriting profit rather than pursuing a blanket geographic rollout.

Hippo is a technology-native insurance group that applies its carrier platform to spread risk across personal and commercial lines. Its homeowners programme draws on specialist industry knowledge and advanced underwriting to provide tailored, proactive cover, while its subsidiaries include Hippo Insurance Services, Spinnaker Insurance Company, Spinnaker Specialty Insurance Company and Wingsail Insurance Company.

Hippo president and CEO Rick McCathron said, “We’ve spent the past two years getting the fundamentals right by strengthening our underwriting, diversifying the business and building technology that gives us much more control over where and how we grow.

“We’re now in a position to selectively expand homeowners again. Rather than following a fixed geographic rollout, we can evaluate markets and distribution opportunities individually and move when the underwriting economics are attractive. That’s what disciplined, profitable growth looks like for Hippo.”
