Amica Insurance, a Rhode Island-based mutual insurer, is offering eligible home policyholders free smart water monitoring through an expanded partnership with Flume, targeting water damage before it develops into an insurance claim.
Customers in participating markets can receive a Flume Smart Home Water Monitor at no cost, with Amica also covering three years of leak monitoring. The device attaches to an existing water meter and does not require changes to household plumbing.
The programme targets a significant source of loss for homeowners. Amica said non-weather-related water damage affects one in every 60 policyholders each year, with the average claim exceeding $21,000. Frozen pipes, leaking taps and overflowing sinks or baths are among the causes the technology is designed to identify.
Flume monitors water use throughout the home and sends alerts to a mobile app when it detects unusual activity. The system can identify issues ranging from running toilets and dripping fixtures to more significant plumbing failures.
Policyholders enrolled in the programme receive one monitor for each eligible property, three years of leak detection and notifications, real-time mobile alerts, monitoring for concealed leaks and plumbing problems, and insights into household water consumption.
Flume was founded in 2015 and is based in San Luis Obispo, California. The company works with homeowners insurers, water utilities and Fortune 500 companies, and says its technology protects hundreds of thousands of US homes while processing trillions of data points each year.
A recent study of insurance carriers found that homes using Flume recorded a 60% reduction in water damage claim frequency and a 24% reduction in claim severity. Of the confirmed leaks identified by the technology, 83% would otherwise have remained hidden for longer, while 77.5% were detected within 24 hours.
Amica was established in 1907 and is the oldest mutual car insurer in the US. It has $6.3bn in assets and more than 3,500 employees, and holds an A+ financial stability rating from AM Best. Forbes has also included Amica in its America’s Best Insurance Companies ranking for six consecutive years.
The programme is available only in participating markets, with Amica contacting eligible customers directly with enrolment information. Customers outside the programme may still be able to purchase Flume devices at a discounted price through the partnership.
Amica chairman, president and CEO Ted Shallcross said, “At Amica, we’re committed to helping our customers protect what matters most. By offering this service to our policyholders, we’re providing a simple, proactive way to identify potential water problems early.”
Flume founder and CEO Eric Adler added, “We’re excited to support Amica’s commitment to helping policyholders prevent water damage before it happens. Early leak detection is one of the most effective ways to reduce water damage risk. By combining real-time monitoring, advanced analytics and proactive homeowner engagement, we’re helping homeowners identify problems sooner and avoid costly repairs.”
