Coverdash partners with 7shifts to embed workers’ compensation into payroll

Coverdash has partnered with restaurant workforce management platform 7shifts to integrate workers’ compensation insurance into its payroll system, using actual wage data to help businesses keep premiums aligned with changing staffing costs.

The integration brings insurance purchasing into 7shifts Payroll, allowing restaurant operators to compare quotes from more than 40 carriers through Coverdash, purchase cover and retrieve Certificates of Insurance (COIs) without switching platforms.

Users can select workers’ compensation when signing up for 7shifts Payroll and purchase a policy with one click after their first payroll run. The system connects insurance pricing with actual payroll figures rather than relying solely on annual estimates.

The partnership highlights how businesses can use operational data to improve the accuracy of financial calculations and reduce manual administration. For restaurants, where staffing levels and wages can vary significantly due to seasonal demand, hourly work and employee turnover, annual payroll projections can quickly become outdated.

Workers’ compensation policies are typically priced using estimated annual payroll, with premiums subsequently adjusted against actual wages. This can create uncertainty around costs and lead to reconciliation work when estimates differ from the final figures.

By connecting coverage to payroll data, Coverdash aims to make premiums more responsive to changes in wage expenditure throughout the year. The integration also brings insurance selection, purchasing and documentation into an existing business workflow, reducing the need for operators to move between separate systems.

While the partnership is not a regulatory compliance product, the approach illustrates the role that connected data and automated workflows can play in improving the consistency of business records and supporting more efficient risk administration.

Coverdash provides technology that allows partner platforms to embed insurance into their products and customer workflows. The New York-based company is licensed across all 50 US states and focuses on simplifying how businesses research, buy and manage commercial cover.

7shifts provides restaurant operators with tools for recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, attendance tracking, tip management, payroll and employee retention, alongside real-time point-of-sale data synchronisation. It says its platform replaces as many as five separate systems for 55,000 restaurants and serves more than 1.5 million restaurant professionals.

7shifts CEO Jordan Boesch said, “Restaurant operators already rely on 7shifts to manage their entire HR workflow and payroll, so adding Workers’ Compensation to that workflow is a natural fit. Partnering with Coverdash gives operators a simpler, more flexible way to manage coverage as their business changes.”

Coverdash head of partnerships Bobby Jones said, “Restaurant payroll can change significantly throughout the year, but Workers’ Compensation has traditionally been built around an annual estimate. By connecting coverage directly to 7shifts Payroll, we’re making it easier to get covered and keep premiums aligned with actual payroll.”
