InsurTech Zego partners with Ginger to help it insure its UK e-scooter trial

InsurTech startup Zego has inked a partnership with e-scooter company Ginger to support its trial in the UK.

E-scooters may have become a common sight across Britain in recent years, but they could now become even more ubiquitous after government made its first move to legalise the vehicle.

In early July, the government launched a 12-month trial to better evaluate how e-scooters would fit into the country’s traffic.

E-scooter rental startup Ginger is one of the businesses that have jumped on the opportunity to cut up a slice of the market during the trial.

It is against this background that Ginger has now partnered up with London-based InsurTech Zego.

The partnership will see Zego provide insurance for Gingeräs e-scooter trial in the Tees Valley.

Ginger has deployed an initial 100 scooters as part of the trial, with an expected 300 scooters by August. Zego’s policy covers all units and is fully integrated into Ginger’s sign-up process to ensure that users have the government’s required Third-Party Liability insurance.

Zego also supplies additional personal accident cover which automatically switches on and off as the rider uses the vehicle. Ginger is absorbing the price of the insurance so that no extra cost is passed onto its riders.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Ginger and playing an important part in the UK’s first e-scooter trial,” said Sten Saar, CEO and co-founder of Zego. “These schemes offer huge potential and will play a key role in helping cities get moving again in a safe and sustainable way.

“We want to support the growth of this industry across the UK by creating adaptable insurance models to suit the needs of e-scooter fleets, riders and local cities. For this form of transport to be widely adopted and welcomed by all, it’s essential that e-scooters come with the right insurance without causing inconvenience for riders.”

Paul Hodgins, CEO of Ginger, added, “Ginger is delighted to be working with Zego to bring the first operational e-scooter trial to the UK. Both Ginger and Zego share a passion to make the world a better place through zero-emission sustainable transport and this partnership has been the product of a genuine understanding of our needs and the communities we operate.”

Ginger is not the first e-scooter company Zego has partnered with.

For instance, Zego partnered with e-scooter company Dott to insure the fleet of vehicles across France and Belgium back in July 2019.
