Nettle, an InsurTech offering an AI-powered workspace for loss control, has closed an oversubscribed $4.8m seed round to take its platform to insurers worldwide.
MTech led the investment, with Project A, Sure Valley Ventures (SVV), Portfolio Ventures and Ventures Together also taking part. The raise follows a $2m pre-seed round secured in March 2025, lifting the company’s total funding to $6.8m.
The startup is targeting a growing capacity gap in commercial insurance. Insurers have an increasing number of risks to evaluate but a shrinking pool of experienced risk engineers to carry out that work. Some teams are dealing with backlogs that stretch to six months, and around 40% of risk engineers are expected to retire by 2030.
Nettle will put the new capital towards expanding in the US and Europe, as well as scaling up its engineering and go-to-market functions. Having already shown it can help risk engineers carry out inspections five times faster, the company is now making the same tools available to agents and policyholders. This lets insurers gather risk data from sites that were previously too costly to inspect.
Nettle’s platform combines risk identification, evidence collection, analysis and reporting in a single environment. AI and external data are used to flag possible exposures before a site visit takes place, while guided inspections let risk engineers, agents and policyholders gather data in a consistent way. The system automatically reviews images, video, audio, documents and third-party data, and can generate reports, risk scores and recommendations in seconds rather than days. Underwriters receive better quality data more quickly, and risk engineers can concentrate their expertise on the most complex risks.
The company counts insurers such as Allianz and Brotherhood Mutual among its customers, with operations spanning Europe, the US and Asia. The platform was originally designed for commercial property but now covers other lines, including liability, construction and workers’ compensation.
Nettle co-founder and CEO Jack Miller said, “Nettle has built a platform that turns Loss Control into a competitive advantage. The purpose has always been to prevent losses, but insurers can only act on the risks they understand.
“Too often, that understanding is limited by the capacity of their teams, and that’s the ceiling we’re removing. Our AI workspace gives insurers the tools to bring more of the portfolio into view, either through risk engineers, agents, or even policyholders. This round lets us take what we’ve proven across three continents, with extremely positive feedback, and scale it everywhere our customers operate.
MTech founder and managing partner Kevin McLoughlin said, “Nettle has built a next-generation platform for risk engineers in their assessment of site risk for large commercial customers. Using generative AI, top global insurers are adopting the Nettle platform, which requires minimal integration effort, to transform physical data collection and analyses for large commercial risks. We are very impressed with Nettle’s success to date and the deep experience the founders bring to an area of insurance often overlooked by start-ups.”
